What is affordable?
Generally, when someone says something is affordable, they mean they can afford it. It is well within their budget and means. This can be a relative term and vary from person to person. What is affordable to one person may not be affordable to another.
Extra features
This is likely the reason why you find a facility that has different prices for different units. Many units have things like lights in the unit, electricity, or a unit alarm. Unit alarms have many functions that vary from loud noises, to contacting the authorities when a unit has been opened. Sometimes the unit has a weird size and you'll have additional room.
Easier Access
Moving into and out of storage is a pain. Some units are just easier to access. Many facilities charge you more for the units on a premium site. These units can include, but are not limited to, units closest to the gate, corner units, units near an elevator, and on the ground floor. Many move-in specials are not for the premium units.
Rates change
Just like many other industries, self-storage units have busier times than others. This means that move-in specials will change along with the unit rates.
The most hands-on operators will tell you that their rates can change daily. Newer facilities tend to give away the units practically. Other companies have been in some trouble for setting a very low rate and then immediately implementing a very steep rate hike. We don't do this at A&G Storage.
Ultimately, there are many different reasons why some facilities charge what they do. If you are ever unsure about what your rate includes or how rate hikes work, make sure you ask. The industry standard is to raise storage rent once every 9 months. If your facility is not transparent about rate hikes, consider renting elsewhere. Between extra features and location, there are many reasons why you will find a storage unit costing more or less for the same product.
