There is a reason that tourists call our area "hotlanta". The summer time is generally the busiest time for the real estate market, as well as self storage. This also means that statistically, most people are moving in the hottest time of the year. 2024 is proving to be one of the hotter years that we've had on record in a long time. Emory hospital has reported an uptick in heat related injuries. Let's look at moving into your storage unit safely.
1. Don't
We're just kidding. We know this is unavoidable. You can move safely in hot weather
2. Take Frequent breaks
You don't want your body to overheat. If you find yourself getting too hot or your heart is racing or that you are light headed, take a break. You may have to take more.
3. Stay Hydrated
Put down the energy drinks and make sure you're fueling your body with water. Consider a sports drink with electrolytes at the end of the day to replace any salt your body has lost through sweating.
4.Stay out of the direct sun
When you must be outdoors, try to stay in the shade whenever possible. This may mean talking in the car port or under the shade of a large tree.
5. Wear sun protection
This goes hand in hand with staying out of the sun. Make sure you're wearing sun screen and a hat. Nothing is worse than getting over heated, then sunburned. Your body wil have a harder time recovering when you're burned too.
6.Make sure utilities are turned on
Don't forget to make sure utilities are turned on in your new dwelling! You can't use your air conditioning if the electricty or gas (or both) isn't turned on!.
7.Mind the time of day
Move your belongings during the earliest part of the day. The hottest time of day is between 3:00 PM-6:00 PM. At A&G Storage, we try to do all of our heavy physical maintence work before sunrise so we don't get overheated.
Moving safely in hot weather is tricky, but it's doable if you are diligent and safe.
